Punishment for violations

Consumers can return old devices: Manufacturers of electrical and electronic equipment, stationary dealers with an electrical sales area from 400 square meters and an online retailer from 400 square meters of electrical storage and shipping space (shelf space) have to take back old devices free of charge. Otherwise they risk competition law warnings, preliminary injunctions and injunction suits. A missing or improper registration with the Stiftung ear can be punished with a fine up to 100,000 Euros, informed the Deutsche Bundesstiftung Umwelt. Registration is possible online on the website of ear.

The Electrical and Electronic Equipment Act (ElektroG) implements the European WEEE directive in German law and regulates the sale, return and environmentally friendly disposal of electrical and electronic equipment.
